Twisting vs Latching...

Since I became emerged in the YouTube cultural, I have noticed in the loc community the line drawn between latching and palm rolling(twisting). When I first started my journey the thought was I would palm roll, it's all I knew. I never took the time to do a lot of research on Locing my hair or the technique I would use (which i regret now), and it wasn't until I met someone at the beauty supply store and she actually latched my hair standing outside on the street. This changed my journey before it really started.

Since that day I have been latching, not as tight a she latched my hair ( I thought my brains was oozing out through my hair follicle , that had been enlarge from the pulling she inflicted on me. I took it apart as soon as I got back to my car), and I found it worked better for me a I like to wet my hair almost daily.

I have heard and seen from numerous YT'ers that they don't latch because
1. It is merely just knotting the hair
2. Because it thins the hair out
and my favorite
3. It doesn't look like REGULAR loc...hum

Most of you know my history on how I started my locs, so I wont bore you with that you can always check my YT channel for that info. My own personal summation of Latching vs Twisting or palm rolling is that
1. Locs are simply matted and knotted hair
2.. It's not the technique that thin the hair, it the doer and their skill and the frequency
..and this I feel doesn't even warrant a response, but I'll give one anyway
3. Side by side my locs look the same as a loc head that is twisted or palm rolled with the exception of naturally different characteristics.

We each have our own special ways of doing things and I dare not say my way is better then yours its just what I prefer. I think the goal should be healthy looking strong locs, and the goal should be doing what is best for your hair to help you reach that goal.

Chime in if you have some insight to share I would love to hear you views!

In a hurry out the door Loc styles

Sometimes I just don't have time to primp in the mirror, and I am so tired of wearing my hair in my normal boring way of all down and parted on the side.

What's my solution you ask, To shave some time from my morning madness, I decided to do a simply style before bed that I could incorporate into a more intricate style in the morning in half the time. I call this base styling, and it has worked pretty well as I am always cute in the morning without wasting to much time.

What's Hot This Summer and How it can Spill over into your Fall

This summer as I watched the latest fashion I was mesmerized by the blends of material the bright colors and how more and more people are taking beautiful risks with their fashion selection.

My favorite piece this season had to be a off the shoulder crochet type dress with bright colors my favorite being the yellow and orange.

What has been interesting and is one of my favorite looks are a pair of short shorts ( preferably khakis for me) a nice white top and the cutest wedges and accessorized perfectly with a light long scarf, and don't forget a nice pair of shades.

Scarfs were the hottest accessory this year and I see no indication that it is passing, I have seen numerous videos on how to wear them and I can appreciate how the idea has grown far pass the winter and into our summer wardrobe.

So whats hot for the fall and how will seasons past translate into hot fall fashion?
From what I have seen on the runways are soft flowing material, ready to wear sexy dress I haven't noticed a lot of color in fact I read in ELLE that white is here to stay for the fall. I plan to keep my eye on this fall's fashion and make my own statement

what are your favorite summer pieces and how will they spill into your fall wardrobe? This is a trend that won't change mixing and matching to create a new look. Take your favorite summer accessory and blend it with your new fall look... how does it look?

To color or Not to color....that is the question

As a hairstylist I have been asked over a  millions times...  can I color my hair? Do you think my hair is strong enough for color?, Will color break my hair off? To these questions I say yes and no...

The truth is if not done correctly and in moderation any chemical can break the hair, dry it out and have other damaging effects.  There are factors you must consider before coloring your hair such as:

*Previous chemical service( relaxer, perms, or prior color service)
* Condition of the hair (elasticity, porosity)
*Daily maintenance (Styling tools, products, and techniques)
I know that many people do their color at home, but it is  my professional advise that you visit a professional colorist, because so much can happen when trying to achieve a certain color.

If you have chosen to take your natural hair color lighter, you will find it necessary to want to color your hair more then recommended to continue the look of having lighter hair. Considering the hair grows about an half an inch a month some people will want to hide any visible signs of new growth. This is a bad idea. If at all possible you should extend your next color process to at least 8-10 weeks.

I personally have chosen to color my locs a lighter color, and because I am natural and I dont like how coloring softens my hair I have chosen to color every 6 months, yes this does give me a considerable amount of dark hair growth, but I'am cool with that. The health and integrity of my hair is most important.

While the advice above is the best I can offer to someone who wishes to color their hair, I personally would say less is best.

Summer Summer Summer Time ( In my Fresh Prince voice)

I don't know about you but I love summer time its my favorite season. I am a true Floridian, but the heat is no friend to my hair. I'm sure a lot of you can identify with the damaging effects of the weather on your hair. No matter how you wear it . Although protective styling would be ideal I don't like wearing my hair in protective style all the time(before I became loc'd), it makes me feel like what's the use in having hair if I can't wear it and enjoy it. That's my rebellious side.

We all know that protecting your hair should be first on the list of hair maintenance. I have just a few tips on how to keep your tresses drenched with moisture. If anyone has any ideas add them to the comment section for other readers. Let's get interactive!

Tips for Loc wearers:

A daily spritzers:
Mix rose water
glycerin (not much as glycerin draws moisture from where it can find it, which could be your hair as well)
essential oils orange, lavender, lemongrass, tea tree(1 or 2 drops)
Carrier oil like Olive oil, Avocado, or Coconut oil
add this in a spray bottle with distilled water
shake before each use and use daily

For Loose naturals and Relaxed
when you do your cleansing regimen or when you do your co-wash using a moisturizing conditioner and allow to sit on the hair for 10 or 15 mins. Be careful not use conditioners that say reconstruct, or strengthening these usually have protein and to much can cause drying to the hair.

Add hot oil treatment to your regimen more frequently then normal (Loc'd and loose naturals)
Wear your hair in protective styling as often as you can
Invest in hats and scarves to protect hair against direct sunlight
SPF your hair by using a good oil to seal in moisture

These are just some of the things I have found helpful in the past, if you have anything to add please add them in the comment section. See ya Later alligator!!!
